Service records for the vehicle that you are looking at purchasing will show you whether or not the car has been maintained at the normal service intervals. Most facilities will place a sticker to indicate the next oil change is due at 'X' number of miles. If the car is 1000 miles past its oil change interval, this should be an indicator of possible problems for that vehicle.
